The latest version of Ubuntu, called Mantic Minotaur, has been released with enhanced security features.

Ubuntu’s 23.10 latest release features fortified security, enhanced desktop app discovery, and new hardware support.

“In this release we’ve raised the bar for what secure by default means for Ubuntu and set the stage for our next Long Term Supported release.” said Oliver Smith, Senior Product Manager for Ubuntu at Canonical. “We’re excited for users to test our preview hardware-backed disk encryption key storage on Ubuntu Desktop, alongside the new App Center which makes it easier than ever to find the software you need.”

Improved security

Traditional full-disk encryption methods require a passphrase to complete the boot process. This forces administrators to choose between manageability and device security.

Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 now supports hardware-backed full-disk encryption with encryption keys stored in the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). The keys are automatically recovered by authenticated boot software.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will introduce broader hardware support and additional encryption configuration and management options for this feature next year.

Ubuntu invested in its default security posture by implementing TPM-backed full-disk encryption and modifying the Ubuntu kernel to address a common exploit path.

New App Center

Ubuntu Desktop’s App Center is a user-friendly hub that supports both snap and deb packages. The App Center makes use of the extensive metadata available through the Canonical Snap Store.

All applications on the Snap Store undergo strict security reviews to enable only necessary permissions by default. A robust signature verification process ensures that only the publisher can modify Snaps.

Support for Raspberry Pi 5 and SiFive HiFive Pro P550

Ubuntu is affirming its commitment to Raspberry Pi and its use in various cases such as Desktop, Server, and IoT. With the help of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Ubuntu 23.10 Desktop and Server will support the new Raspberry Pi 5 from launch day.

“With Raspberry Pi 5 we’ve boosted the power and performance of the worlds’ most popular PC to deliver a fully-fledged developer platform.” said Gordon Hollingworth, Chief Technology Officer –of softwareat Raspberry Pi Trading, “We’re excited to see how the Ubuntu community leverages this power to create innovative and compelling new experiences.”
