Today, small to medium sized businesses (SMBs) are turning their focus to protecting their data and insuring themselves in the event of a cyberattack.
Earlier this year, Warren Buffett said Cybersecurity incidents will rise, and with them the potential to significantly harm the insurance industry. He said he doesn’t want much underwriting exposure to cybersecurity threats for Berkshire Hathaway’s insurance businesses, and expressed scepticism that any insurance company can assess the risk for Cybersecurity events.
“Cyber Insurance is one of the fastest growing insurance products for small businesses,” said Bill Kampf, General Manager of Small Business Insurance at Progressive Insurance. “Progressive wants to make finding insurance easier for the small business owner, and by working with CyberPolicy, we can offer consumers an efficient platform to shop for cyber insurance and easily find coverages to help protect their business.”
In South Africa, Santho Mohapeloa, Digital Distribution Specialist at SHA Specialist Underwriters notes, cybercrime has become the top risk for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
“The SHA Cyber Security survey found that 42.5 percent of businesses do not have adequate anti-cyber-attack procedures in place. It found that around 60 percent of SMEs impacted suffered a financial loss of between R50 000 and R1 million. It’s also been reported that up to 60 percent of SMEs never recover after a significant cyber breach,” said Mohapeloa.
As per report, cyber insurance coverage and premiums are based on an organization’s industry, type of services provided, data risks and exposures, security posture, policies and annual gross revenue. As examples only, premiums may range from $800 to $1,200 for consultants, tax preparers and small organizations with revenues of $100,000 to $500,000, to $10,000 to over $100,000 for those with revenues in the millions.
