A recent security lapse at TikTok has shaken the social media world, raising concerns about the platform’s ability to protect user data, especially for high-profile accounts. According to a report, attackers were able to exploit a vulnerability to gain control of celebrity TikTok accounts.

These attacks, known as zero-click attacks,” don’t require the victim to click on any malicious links or downloads. Instead, they leverage software weaknesses to infiltrate devices remotely.

The report details how attackers used zero-click attacks delivered via direct messages (DMs) to compromise accounts. This is particularly concerning, as DMs are often seen as a more private form of communication.

While TikTok has acknowledged the issue and assures that steps have been taken to prevent similar attacks, this is not the first time the platform has faced security concerns.

A TikTok spokesperson said Ms. Paris Hilton’s account was targeted, but it was not compromised.

BBC report said.

In the past, attackers have targeted TikTok to build databases of user information and exploit vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access to accounts. Additionally, TikTok’s ties to China have long been a source of security anxieties, with some countries even banning the app altogether.

In March 2023, UK Banned TikTok From Government Devices.

TikTok Faces a Ban in U.S

Facing a US ban over national security concerns, TikTok, the app with 170 million US users, is owned by the Chinese firm ByteDance, report added. To avoid a ban, ByteDance needs to sell the app to a US company by mid-January. But TikTok is fighting back in court, arguing the ban is unconstitutional and hurts free speech.

What This Means for You – Importance of TikTok Security

While the recent attacks specifically targeted celebrities, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity for all TikTok users. Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • Be alert with DMs: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown senders, even if they appear to be from someone you know.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification code in addition to your password when logging in.
  • Keep your app updated: App updates often include security patches, so be sure to update your TikTok app as soon as new versions become available.
  • Be mindful of what you share: Avoid sharing personal information or sensitive content in your TikTok videos or DMs.

By following these steps, you can help to mitigate your risk of being targeted by a cyberattack. While TikTok has assured users that they are taking steps to improve security, it’s important to remain vigilant and practice safe online habits.
